Tonia Papke founded Management Development International in 1985 to assist international non-profit organizations in adapting business management skills to run their operations effectively. MDI developed practical tools to provide organizations with management and financial skills. In 1987, MDI added a Business Services Division to address the needs of emerging businesses, including business planning, marketing, and financial management. In 2001, MDI added the Telecommunications Division, and changed the name to MDI Consulting to better reflect the breadth of consulting services offered.
